How do you know if an equation is linear

If there is an exponent involved, the equation is not linear. y=mx+b is the slope-intercept form and as you can see, there are not exponents.

An equation is linear if there is no exponent for an x-value.

For instance:

y = x + 2 Yes
y = x^2 No
