Darlene melted a stick of butter and set the liquid butter on the counter. After a few hours, Darlene saw that the butter had become solid again. What happened to cause the liquid butter to turn back into a solid?

the state of matter changed due to the lack of heat. As it got hotter the molecules separated but as it cooled they rejoined each other.

Justification ; The state of matter changes as the amount of heat energy in a substance's particles changes. Gases tend to have more heat energy than liquids. Liquids tend to have more heat energy than solids.

In order for liquid butter to become solid again, it must have lost heat energy.
