The United States and Soviet Union funded rebel groups. While Angola gained independence from Portugal in 1975, fighting still continued until at least 1988 and even up to 2002. In 1975 until about 1991, Cuban troops aided the left wing Angolans to defeat the US funded South African regime trying to control Angola.
