In what way did Marie Curie take a lead in world science?

She was an early scientist that studied radioactivity, along with her husband. She won 2 Nobel Prizes in her lifetime and has a high place of honor in French history. Her study of radium was especially important, helping to change preconceived ideas as to how radioactivity worked.
