1. Sam will need to make only 7 cuts, as the 8th piece gets cut off on its own.
He will take 35 minutes to make 7 cuts as it takes him 5 minutes to make one cut.
2. I am not really sure on how to use a table, but it would help you organize and solve this problem by the "trial and error" method.
