What were the circumstances around West Virginia's entry into the Union?

During the Civil War, Virginia was a slave state. It was also near the border of the Union and the Confederacy. The more northern part of the state, being closer to the Union, did not agree with slavery and thus decided to break from Virginia and become West Virginia.
