transfer amino acids from cytoplasmic pool of amino acids to a growing polypeptide in a ribosome; ribosome adds each amino acid brought to it by tRNA to growing end of polypeptide chain; acts like a translator in a sense that it can read a nucleic acid (mRNA) and interpret it as a protein (amino acid)
