In William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Mercutio is a close friend of Romeo while Tybalt is Juliet's cousin. Due to the feud between the families of Romeo and Juliet, Tybalt threatens to kill Romeo after having found out of his relationship with Juliet. However, Romeo refused to fight him so Mercutio instead steps up to tease Tybalt to engage him in a fight.
