The answer is C.  Many soldiers died of typhoid fever and other serious diseases and infections.

Soldiers who died in the Civil War on both sides, the Union and the Confederation were dying during warfare, succumbing to wounds, disappearing or dying of disease and infection. However, of all those who died, by far the biggest cause was diseases, infections and unhygienic conditions in improvised hospitals in the background of war operations, as well as diagnostic procedures, medical tools, equipment, were very severe compared to modern conditions.

The answer is: C.
