The U-2 incident was the shooting down of an American reconnaissance plane by the Soviets in May 1960. The plane had departed from Pakistan and was flying over Soviet territory. After the incident, the Soviet Union's leader, Nikita Khrushchev informed that the pilot was safe and labeled the act as "an aggressive act" by the United States. This caused the collapse of a conference which was being held in Paris at the time.

The U-2 incident was over a US CIA spy plane flying over the Soviet Union and taking photos of military installations and it was shot down by a missile from the Soviet Union so it caused a serious rift in relations between the two superpowers.
