The scientist may assume that the planet might be a gas giant. The scientist can make this assumption because the phenomenon is observed in the solar system. Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus are gas giants in our solar system. Jupiter and Saturn show the characteristic of having alternating bands in the atmosphere that flow in the same direction.
