There can be many mistakes in DNA replication. These are known as mutations. There are three main types of mutations: substitution, insertion, and deletion. The substitution mutation substitutes one amino acid with a different one and may change the whole codon. The insertion mutation inserts a different amino acid instead of the amino acid in the original sequence. Finally, the deletion mutation completely deletes an amino acid from a codon.
