When you have a negative number + another negative number, the + cancels out and you just subtract. -3 - 5 = -8. On the number line, you would start at -3 and (add) -5 to it.

Answer = -8
Using number line, start with -3
-3 -1 = -4
-4 -1 = -5
.......
-7 -1 = -8
-3 -4 -5 -6 -7 -8
