Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is a substrate made in the mitochondria. ATP is used in cell signalling. - Hormones bind to specific receptors on the cell membrane. Because of this, ATP is converted to cyclic AMP (cAMP) which acts as a second messenger in the cell, causing the cell to respond to the hormone and help maintain homeostasis.
