Why was Mandela sentenced to life in prison? Where was the prison?

Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years because he was found guilty of conspiracy and sabotage to overthrow the government of South Africa, together with other eight National African Congress Leaders. 7 November 1962, Sentenced to five years for leaving the country without a passport and incitement. Begins serving his sentence at the Pretoria Local Prison.

he was sent to prison for trying to leave the country without a passport or indictment and the prison was famously on Robben island.
