What caused the "cold war" between the united states and the soviet union, and what events led to ongoing tension between these nations during that period?

For security reasons, the soviet government refused to give up control of Eastern europe after world II. Nor were american leaders willing to give up the power and prestige the U.S. had gained throughout the world. Between 1945 and 1949, a number of events led these two superpowers into conflict.
