3 1/2 + 4 5/6

Multiply 3 1/2 by 3/3 so that both fractions have "6" as their bottom number (denominator).

3 1/2 × 3/3 = 3 3/6

So, our new question is this : 3 3/6 + 4 5/6

Basically, when both fractions have the same bottom number (denominator), all you have to do is add the top numbers (numerators) as well as adding the whole numbers. Remember, you always keep the bottom number (denominator) the same when you are adding or subtracting.

Whole number : 3 + 4 = 7

Numerator : 3 + 5 = 8

Denominator : 6

So, our answer is 7 8/6

However, because the top number (numerator) is greater than the bottom number (denominator), you have to make the whole number larger.

So, our answer is 8 2/6

Simplify.

8 1/3
