Why did Queen Elizabeth I ban all performances of religious plays and stories?

At the time there was division in England between the Protestants and the Catholics. Each denomination had its own view on how certain things were performed and translated out of the stories of Saints and Biblical figures.

She wisely banned the plays and stories, to help stop the violence between the Prot. and Cath.
