October 1, 1962! This was a huge deal back in the day as things like Jim Crow enabled the white community to keep the black community out of their schools, including higher institutions of learning (like the University of Mississippi). Unfortunately some people were pretty upset by this at the time and caused a huge fuss (a riot more specifically). Kennedy had to call in the Army and the National Guard to put an end to the rioting.
