According to the EPA... If someone burns fossil fuels, the reaction releases nitrogen oxides up and into the atmosphere. This contributes to the creation of smog (sometimes acid rain). The biggest sources of nitrogen oxide emissions are: vehicles, coal power plants, ships, airplanes, and large industrial operations.
