they did not want to get involved in foreign issues and they did not want to start another world war

The large number of American casualties in World War I was the main reason the US had adopted a policy of Isolationism prior to World War ll. They did not want to get involved in anymore foreign wars. Pearl Harbour bombing changed this outlook though.
