The least speed in miles per hour that an airplane can safely land is inversely proportional to the area of its wings. If an airplane with a wing area of 360 sq. ft. can land safely at 55 mph, at what speed could a plane land with a wing area of 450 sq. ft.?

Answer:

44 miles per hour.

Explanation:

It is given in the question that an airplane can safely land is inversely proportional to the area of its wings.

Safety ∝ 1/(Area of the wings)

Safety = K.(1/area of the wings)-----------(1)

If an airplane has the area of wing 360 sq. ft. it can land safely at the speed of 55 mph.

This data will help us to find the constant.

From equation (1)

55=K((1)/(360))

K= 55×360 = 19800

Now we have to find the speed at which airplane could land with wing area 450 sq.ft.

Speed = 19800((1)/(450))=44 mph

Therefore at 44 mph an airplane could land safely with wing area of 450 sq.ft.
