The correct answer is A) New methods for farming had to be developed.

Poor farming lead to more cotton production in that new method for farming had to be developed.

Cotton was the king in the Southern States. They produced so much cotton that was exported to Europe. The economy of these southern states depended so much on agriculture, and for agriculture, to function, it needed slaves to work on the plantations. Some of the problems farmers faced were the over-production of cotton and what to do with the excedents. Prices went down an this affected agriculture.
