Read the following line from the text:

The now ghastly pallor of the skin, and the now miraculous lustre of the eye, above all things startled and even awed me.

What does the author mean by startled and even awed in this sentence?

The author uses the phrase "started and even awed" to show that he is both scared and amazed by the brigthnes of the paleness of the woman's skin and the brightness of her eyes.
