I believe that the terms that we use to discuss characters that were coined by E.M. Forster are
round
and
flat
characters.
A round character is a realistic one, behaving like a real person that exists outside of the novel. It is a character with many flaws and virtues - neither perfect nor the devil himself. On the other hand, a flat character is the one that doesn't evolve at all or change throughout a novel or other literary work.
