exposition accomplishes three purposes: provides background information, establishes the setting, and introduces the characters. The exposition ends with the inciting incident, the point at which the action begins and the complication (or rising action in a drama) begins. Depending on the length of a work, the exposition may be a few paragraphs or several pages.
