Why would frescoes be an important part of Romanesque architecture, but rarely used in Gothic architecture?

Romanesque was very narrative in style, so its art forms like colour and line were thoroughly subservient to the stories that were told in the pictures, but gothic art emphasise images in the stained glass windows of its cathedrals, and less on its walls.
