On the way to the pageant, their "friend," Cecil Jacobs scares them when they are on the way to the pageant. Jem has to carry Scout's costume because she didn't want to wear it. They were frightened, but then when they got inside, Scout and Jem forgave Cecil and they had a good time at the pageant, but Scout totally fell asleep during her part in the play.
