humans typically display aerobic as we breathe oxygen naturally, but in the case where we cannot inhale/exhale fast enough to supply the reaction with sufficient oxygen, anaerobic respiration will occur. i.e. lactic acid formation, the source of the burning in your muscles (and fatigue) after a long workout, is a product of anaerobic respiration.
