In a direct democracy, citizens DIRECTLY choose who they want to elect or vote for. However, in a democratic republic (Like what the U.S. has) citizens elect representatives based on what they stand for, who elect who they want to vote for.

Direct democracy is where the people vote on every single thing. Representative democracy is where the people vote for a person to represent them in Congress.
