The Hagia Sophia, which means “Holy Wisdom”, dedicated to the second person of the Holy Trinity, was built between 532 and 537 by the architects Antémio de Tralles and Isidoro de Mileto, under the direct supervision of Justinian. It is a classic exemple of Byzantine architecture. Rectangular in plan, it is dominated by the large central dome, 31 meters in diameter and 55 meters high. At the bottom of the dome are a series of windows that lie between the reinforcing arches to support the gigantic structure. A few years after construction, the majestic dome collapsed as a result of an earthquake, but was again raised - with the same technique and layout.
