Although, many of the policies that former President John F. Kennedy implemented during the cold war are mostly based on Truman's containment policy, mainly focus on having diplomatic initiatives in the Asia, Latin America, and Europe in order to maintain its regional stability.

Dwight Eisenhower had relied too much on nuclear weapons, to allow a "flexible response" to resist communist movements, while President Kennedy encouraged the accumulation of conventional weapons and troops. Kennedy also expanded the Special Forces, an elite army unit used in limited conflicts.
