treat the imaginary component or "i" as a variable and add up like terms
(8-15i) +(-3+2i)
adding up like terms would mean you add the 8 and -3 together, and the -15i and 2i together
8-15i -3 +2i
(8-3) +(-15i +2i)
5 + (-13i)
5 -13i
