The history of Russia is based around Eastern Slavs who started migrating to Russia in the 8th century. In the 9th, the first country was created and was called the Kievan Rus empire. It was more like a federation however, but it wasn't very serious. Afterwards, the Rus started splitting and were defeated by the Mongols who attacked them. They recovered and eventually became a great empire.
