The process takes place by twisting the cell membrane of the "host" and enveloping the particles with a phagocytic bubble. Leukocytes use phagocytosis to take in and incapacitate bacteria that enter our body, so phagocytosis plays an important role in the immune system, as it prevents harmful cells from affecting humans.
