Primarily the Roosevelt administration decided to invade Algeria and Morocco in order to aid Great Britain in maintaining control of the Suez Canal in neighboring Egypt. Roosevelt also claimed that it was a good opportunity to gain experience for the troops, which is a pretty insane rationalization for sending your own citizens to kills others and likely be killed themselves.
