Nixon’s policies’ southern strategy in 1960’s to backlash against the civil rights revolution ended the “solid south” of the Democrats. Nixon’s “southern strategy” also exploited antipathy, hatred, and animosity to black protest, and also the civil rights policies, inroads into Democratic strongholds.
