Before World War 1 countries were forming alliances. Britain
and France were allied with Serbia and German and Russia were allied with Austria-Hungary. When Archduke Ferdinand was assasinated all these countries were brought into a "local" war between Serbia and Austria-Hungary. Hope this helps!
