The feared the European "worst" more than the American one, and knew they had less chance of avoiding it

There are many push factors to cause immigrants to leave their homeland for a land of uncertainty:

Religious / Racial / Sexual Persecution
More economic opportunity elsewhere
better education elsewhere
better quality of life elsewhere
