Cytochrome c oxidase is a transmembrane protein complex found in bacteria and in mitochondria of eukaryotes. It uses electrons from cytochrome c molecules to convert molecular oxygen to water. In this process, it helps to establish a transmembrane difference of electrochemical potential which is important in the production of ATP.
