A friend of yours spends a lot of time on facebook, as he has a lot of close friendships there. he is somewhat alienated from his family, who lives far away and most of whom he sees perhaps once a year. lately, he’s been very involved – electronically, of course – with a special, secret group on facebook whose members share the same common concern about their families and the emotional distance they all seem to experience. your friend’s family would be considered

Your friend's family would be considered as a primary group. A primary group is basically a small group and the primary is consists of members which share concerns and same activities and cultures. Just like in the scenario stated, the family shares a common ground.
