When two fractions refer to the same whole and have the same denominator explain why you can compare only the numerator?

because referring to only the numerators will appear like referring to multiple whole numbers, which is inaccurate since you are dealing with fractions of one whole... hence the denominator has to be taken into consideration. Hope that helped
