5. In a short paragraph, describe the transition of Rome from a republic to an empire. What was the republic like, and what caused it to become an empire?

The Senate of the Republic version of Rome were hungry for power. While they were fighting over status, Augustus Caesar claimed the throne. Once he had done that, he deemed himself dictator for life. The rest is history.
