Suppose you saw an unusual plant while you were walking in a wooded area. Could you tell whether the plant was a monocot or a dicot simply by observing it? If so, how?

If you walk through a corn field when the type of growth is secondary because the meristems were not epidermis of monocots and dicots, but the patterning is quite different.
