The density of ice is lower than the density of water and this is helpful in the way that ice floats on water and water stays beneath this ice.

This ice acts an insulation for the aquatic animals as the cool air does not sinks inside the lakes creating problems for the animals as they cannot survive in a colder conditions.

The ice prevents the lake water from freezing temperature which will eventually kill the organism inside it.
