Any number times itself is a positive number (or zero), so you can't ever get to anegative number by squaring. Since square roots undo squaring, negative numbers can't have square roots. The square root of a number y is defined to be the value x such that x 2 = y . However, for any real number x , x 2 ≥ 0 .

I hope this helps.
