When Northern soldiers proclaimed they were fighting to protect and defend the Constitution, in reality, what was it they wanted to maintain? They wanted to keep the system that they currently had, which advocated a strong national government. They fought to keep the Union, not allowing states to leave if they so desired. They argued that the Constitution is the law of the land and must be enforced.
