In 1807, an American war ship, the “Chesapeake” was stoped in the Mediterranean Sea by a British ship, the Leopard. The British sailors demanded they board the ship to look for British deserters. When the Americans refused, the British fired on the Chesapeake, killing 3 Americans and wounding 18.
