Just recently, most specifically last 2013, the pathogen that scientists pointed out to cause the Irish Potato Famine is the Phytophthora infestans. This specific type of fungus causes the potato blight that destroyed and infected the plant structures of the potatoes and tomatoes. The fungi was believed to be spread airborne.
