Why were christians persecuted for their beliefs?

The beliefs of the christians were not the same as the country's religion, like in Rome with the Romans and the Christians. That's just one example because I don't know what time period you are asking for from the past, but I hope this helps. =-D

Although it is often claimed that Christians were persecuted for their refusal to worship the emperor, general dislike for Christians likely arose from their refusal to worship the gods or take part in sacrifice, which was expected of those living in the Roman Empire.
